TAKE CHAOS OUT OF FREE BUS PASSES – WILLIAMS
Roger Williams MP, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Wales, took part in a debate on concessionary bus passes on Tuesday 25th March and called for Westminster and the Welsh Assembly to get their act together on cross border journeys.

ROGER WILLIAMS CALLS ON SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WALES TO HELP RESOLVE THE LAST CLAIMS FOR MINERS COMPENSATION
Before the Welsh Grand Committee started debating the Budget, there was an opportunity to question the Secretary of State for Wales. Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Wales, took up the issue of miners’ compensation. Most of these claims have been sorted but three classes of claim are still outstanding.

SMALL BUSINESSES HIT BY BUDGET – WILLIAMS
Speaking in the Welsh Grand Committee Debate on the Budget, Roger Williams MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Wales, said that increases in corporation tax for small businesses and the abolition of tax relief and commercial and agricultural buildings shows just how out of touch this government is with the needs of rural Wales and the small businesses that are its lifeblood.

GOVERNMENT MUST ACT ON FOOD WASTE – WILLIAMS
Commenting today on the government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs Spokeperson, has criticised the Government for the impact funding cuts to WRAP will have on food waste reduction.

LOSS OF LEGAL AID LAWYERS A REAL BLOW TO LOW AND MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES – WILLIAMS
Commenting today on the decrease in solicitor offices that are offering legal aid, Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has criticised the Government for the impact this will have on low income families.

The figures, received in a response to a parliamentary question, showed that, in Wales, since 2004, 38 solicitors’ offices that previously provided criminal legal aid and 41 solicitors’ offices that had provided civil legal aid had ceased to provide this service.

MP LEADS DELEGATION TO 10 DOWNING ST. IN FIGHT TO SAVE POST OFFICES
Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has led a delegation of local councillors and campaigners to 10 Downing Street in the fight to save Brecon and Radnorshire’s local post offices.

MP & AM angered at devastating loss of 14 Post offices in Brecon & Radnorshire
The Post Office Ltd has today announced that 6 Post Offices in Brecon & Radnorshire have been earmarked for closure with a further 8 to be replaced by ‘outreach’ services, including the use of a mobile service van or a hosted service in the local village hall.

WILLIAMS WELCOMES RUMOURS ON BARNETT REFORM
Liberal Democrat Shadow Welsh Secretary Roger Williams has today welcomed reports that The Prime Minister has asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to review the way in which the National Assembly in Wales and the Scottish Parliament are funded.

POWYS BANKRUPTCY AND INSOLVENCY RATES ALARMING – WILLIAMS AND ÖPIK
Figures released today by the Insolvency Service show a huge rise in the number of bankruptcies and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) in Powys.



The figures released show regional insolvency and bankruptcy figures for 2000 to 2006



The figures reveal:

There were 75 IVAs in Powys in 2006 – a 295% increase on 2000 and a 114% increase on 2005.
There were 90 bankruptcies in Powys in 2006 – an 80% increase on 2000 and a 17% rise on 2005.

MP takes Post Office Campaign to Downing Street
Brecon and Radnorshire MP Roger Williams will be taking his Save our Post Offices postcard campaign to Downing Street on Tuesday 11th March. Timed to coincide with the announcement of possible Post Office closures in Powys, Mr Williams will be delivering well over 2000 postcards to Downing Street from constituents who are concerned about the future of their local post office.

ROGER WILLIAMS MP BACKS MORE DEMOCRACY FOR CITIZENS
Roger Williams MP has called for a Citizens Convention to look at how citizens can be more empowered and how our democracy can be renewed so that it truly reflects the needs and aspirations of ordinary people.

The Citizens Convention Bill will directly address public distrust in politics and politicians because the Government as part of the convention will be required to take steps to actively involve those members of society most dissatisfied and disengaged with the current system. The Citizens Convention will help these citizens realise their views do count because the Government will be required by the Bill to take into account their views when implementing recommendations of the convention.

LATEST RURAL POVERTY FIGURES NEED URGENT ATTENTION - WILLIAMS
Commenting today on figures released by the Rural Services Network, showing that nearly 1million rural households are affected by poverty, Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs Spokesperson, has called for urgent action to be taken to address the problem.
