MP DRAWS ATTENTION TO NEW POLICE NON- EMERGENCY NUMBER

1.12.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 7th Sep 2009

Brecon & Radnorshires Liberal Democrat MP, Roger Williams, is stepping up his efforts to draw his constituents attention to the new 101 non-emergency Police telephone number, introduced from April this year.

Mr. Williamss efforts at local level coincide with a major publicity campaign being launched across Wales this week by Welsh Police Forces to raise the profile of the 101 number.

Commenting on the new number, Mr. Williams said:

Whatever peoples views about the introduction of a new non-emergency Police contact number, the fact is the new system is up and running and provides an alternative method of reporting non-emergency incidents and making non-emergency enquiries to their local Police Force. It is important that as many people as possible are aware of the 101 telephone number and that they understand when it is appropriate to use it. That is why I am supporting all efforts to publicise the new service. It should help to relieve the pressure on the Police created by people calling 999, even when there is not an emergency. Now they have an alternative telephone number to use.
