WILLIAMS CONTINUES CAMPAIGN FOR RURAL FUEL DUTY REBATE

11.38.36am GMT Wed 10th Feb 2010

Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, today used a Westminster Hall debate to call on the Treasury to provide a fuel duty rebate for rural areas.

Speaking after the debate, Mr Williams said:

"Fuel prices in rural areas are often far higher than in urban areas, yet the provision of alternative public transport is far scarcer, if not non-existent in some cases.

"Other EU nations, such as Italy, France and Greece, have managed to secure rural fuel rebates for their most rural areas, yet the UK Treasury steadfastly refuses to do so.

"I hope that the Minister will take these concerns on board and look again at the possibility of introducing a rural fuel derogation to assist those people for which the only transport option is their own private vehicles."
