WILLIAMS WELCOMES OLYMPIC REBATE

10.00.26am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 28th Jun 2010

Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has welcomed the announcement that Wales will not have to provide any further funding towards the Olympics.

Mr Williams said:

"I wrote last week to Cheryl Gillan MP, Secretary of State for Wales, about ways in which the Coalition Government could improve the funding settlement for Wales.

"Amongst the suggestions I made to her was the proposal to redefine the Olympics as 'England only' and have the Barnett consequential applied so that some of this money is returned to Wales.

"I am pleased that this suggestion appears to have been taken on board.

"The Olympics will bring no noticeable benefit to Wales and, in the current economic climate, it does not seem right that Welsh money is spent on English sporting events."
